Principle of 330kV Relay Protection Anti-pumping Circuit

The anti-pumping relay ensures that a 330kV circuit breaker closes only once per close command, preventing repeated closing during faults or continuous close signals.

Overview

In high-voltage systems like 330kV substations, circuit breakers are critical for isolating faults and protecting equipment. During a fault, repeated closing attempts can damage the breaker mechanism, trip coils, or other equipment. The anti-pumping relay (also called Y-relay or ANSI 94 Trip-Free Relay) is an auxiliary protective device that prevents such repeated operations by allowing only one close operation per close command .

Working Principle

  1. Initial Condition: When the circuit breaker (CB) is open and the spring is fully charged, the auxiliary contacts are positioned such that the closing circuit is complete. The normally closed (NC) contact of the anti-pumping relay allows the closing coil to be energized when a close command is issued .
  2. Closing Operation: When the operator presses the Remote Close switch or the Local TNC switch, current flows through the closing coil, energizing it and closing the breaker. This action changes the state of the auxiliary contacts (e.g., 52a closes, 52b opens), which in turn energizes the anti-pumping coil .
  3. Anti-Pumping Activation: Once energized, the anti-pumping relay opens its NC contact in the closing path, cutting off power to the closing coil. This prevents any further closing attempts even if the close command is held continuously or repeated quickly .
  4. Latching Mechanism: The anti-pumping relay also closes its NO contact in its own circuit, creating a latch that maintains the relay in the energized state until the operator releases the close switch. This ensures that the breaker cannot "pump" (rapidly open and close) during persistent faults .
  5. Reset Condition: To close the breaker again after a trip, the close command must be removed and re-applied. This resets the anti-pumping relay and allows a new single close operation .

Importance in 330kV Systems

  • Prevents Equipment Damage: Avoids repeated closing and tripping that can burn the trip or close coils and damage the breaker mechanism .
  • Enhances Safety: Reduces the risk of electrical hazards caused by rapid breaker operations.
  • Maintains System Stability: Ensures that only one close operation occurs per command, even under fault conditions or operator error .

Circuit Components

  • Anti-Pumping Coil: Energized during the first close operation.
  • Auxiliary Contacts (NO/NC): Control the closing path and latch the relay.
  • Closing Coil (CC): Operates the breaker.
  • TNC or Remote Close Switch: Initiates the close command.
  • Breaker Auxiliary Contacts (52a/52b): Provide feedback to the anti-pumping relay for proper sequencing . In summary, the 330kV anti-pumping relay circuit acts as an interlock that ensures one-time breaker closure per command, protecting high-voltage equipment from repeated operations and maintaining operational safety and reliability.
