Sensitivity and Signal Adjustment

Adjusting the sensitivity is a primary step. Begin with the sensor's sensitivity set to its minimum threshold and gradually increase it until the sensor reliably detects the target. For diffuse reflective sensors, place the target at the farthest expected distance and adjust until the output switches cleanly. For transparent or reflective objects, reduce sensitivity and consider using polarizing filters to minimize glare. Hysteresis can also be adjusted to prevent jitter around the detection threshold, especially for moving targets on a conveyor belt .

Fiber Alignment and Connector Handling

Proper fiber alignment is critical. For through-beam sensors, align the emitter and receiver fibers precisely, using a laser alignment tool if necessary. Ensure fiber ends are clean and avoid over-tightening connectors, which can cause signal loss. Limited-reflective and retro-reflective sensors require careful positioning to ensure the light path overlaps correctly with the target area .

Calibration Techniques

Calibration ensures the sensor's output matches the expected reference. Methods include:

  • Mechanical loading: Apply controlled strain using a load cell or hydraulic jack for strain sensors.
  • Thermal loading: Use a thermal chamber to apply temperature changes for high-resolution calibration.
  • Optical loading: Adjust wavelength or intensity using a tunable laser for remote or online calibration .

Environmental Optimization

Environmental factors can affect performance. Shield the sensor from ambient light using hoods or modulated light sources. Route cables away from high-voltage lines and use shielded wiring to reduce electrical noise. For high-speed moving targets, select sensors with fast switching frequencies (≥1 kHz) and use teach-in routines to sample multiple positions for optimal switching points .

Verification and Troubleshooting

After adjustment, verify performance by monitoring the output with an oscilloscope or multimeter. Check for missed detections or false triggers during actual operation. If issues arise, inspect fiber cables for bends or breaks, measure light intensity at the receiver, and ensure the power supply is stable. Resetting to factory defaults and re-calibrating may be necessary in some cases . By combining sensitivity tuning, precise alignment, proper calibration, and environmental management, fiber optic sensors can achieve reliable and accurate detection across a wide range of applications.
