Overview of Fiber Termination

Fiber termination is the process of preparing the end of a fiber optic cable to connect to another fiber, a device, or a network. Proper termination ensures low signal loss, high transmission quality, and durability of the connection. There are two primary approaches: splicing (permanent or semi-permanent joining of fibers) and connectorization (attaching removable connectors) .

Fiber Optic Splicing

Splicing is used to permanently join two fiber optic cables, often for long-distance runs, repairs, or when extending cable length. There are two main splicing methods:

1. Fusion Splicing

  • Process: Uses an electric arc to melt and fuse the ends of two fibers into a single continuous strand.
  • Steps:
    1. Fiber Preparation: Strip the protective coating and clean the bare glass.
    2. Cleaving: Precisely cut the fiber end to create a smooth, perpendicular surface.
    3. Alignment: Align the fiber cores using a fusion splicer.

2. Mechanical Splicing

  • Process: Aligns fibers in a mechanical fixture using gel or adhesive.
  • Advantages: Easier to perform, allows semi-permanent connections.
  • Considerations: Slightly higher signal loss than fusion splicing, less durable .

Fiber Optic Termination with Connectors

Connectorized termination provides a removable and reusable connection for fiber cables, commonly used in data centers and environments requiring frequent reconfiguration.

Steps for Connector Termination

  1. Cable Stripping: Remove the outer jacket and aramid fibers carefully.
  2. Buffer Coating Removal: Strip the 250 µm or 900 µm coating from the fiber.
  3. Cleaving: Cut the fiber to the correct length for the connector.
  4. Insertion: Place the fiber into the connector ferrule, ensuring precise alignment.
  5. Polishing: Polish the fiber endface to minimize signal loss.
  6. Testing: Verify insertion loss and reflectance meet specifications .

Common Connector Types

  • LC (Lucent Connector): Compact, high-density applications.
  • SC (Subscriber Connector): Push-pull design for easy insertion/removal.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): Angled ferrule reduces back reflection, ideal for single-mode systems .
