Overview of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors consist of two main components: an amplifier and fiber sensor heads. The amplifier contains the light source and processing electronics, while the fiber heads transmit and receive light to detect objects or changes in the environment . Because the sensing heads contain no electronics, they are ideal for tight spaces, high temperatures, vibration-prone areas, or chemically harsh environments . Detection methods include through-beam, reflective, retro-reflective, and area detection, depending on the application .

Purpose of a Sensor Fixture

A fiber optic sensor fixture serves to:

  • Secure the fiber head or cable in a fixed position relative to the target.
  • Maintain alignment for accurate light transmission and reflection.
  • Protect the fiber from mechanical stress, bending beyond its minimum radius, or environmental damage.

  • Environmental protection: Fixtures should shield fibers from dust, moisture, vibration, or chemical exposure .
  • Accessibility: The fixture should allow easy replacement or adjustment of the fiber head without disturbing the amplifier unit .
  • Alignment: Use adjustable mounts or micrometer screws for precise positioning, especially in retro-reflective or area detection setups .
