Overview of Single-Mode Fiber Testing

Fluke Networks provides several tools for testing single-mode fibers, including the CertiFiber Pro OLTS, OptiFiber Pro OTDR, and SimpliFiber Pro Optical Power Meter. These instruments measure optical loss, verify link integrity, and inspect connector end-faces to ensure compliance with industry standards . Single-mode testing is essential for long-distance links, PON networks, and simplex applications such as CCTV .

Setting Up a Single-Mode Test

  1. Select the Test Module: On the CertiFiber Pro, choose the module for single-mode testing.
  2. Configure Test Parameters: Set the fiber type to OS2 Singlemode, select the connector type (e.g., SC or LC), and choose the appropriate test limit, such as General Fiber Optic or a custom fixed loss limit .
  3. Far-End Source Testing: For single fibers, configure the tester to measure loss from one end. Note that length may not be reported in simplex testing .
  4. Inspection: Use the FI-1000 FiberInspector or the CertiFiber Pro USB camera to inspect and grade connector end-faces according to IEC 61300-3-35 standards. Clean connectors before testing to avoid measurement errors or damage .

Testing Without Remote End Access

If the far end of the fiber is inaccessible, testing can still be performed using a SmartLoop cord and a remote assistant to connect test cords. This allows Tier 1 (basic loss) and Tier 2 (extended) testing, ensuring the fiber is operational and generating a complete test report via LinkWare .

Generating the Test Report

  1. Run the Test: Perform the loss measurement and connector inspection.
  2. Store Results: CertiFiber Pro stores results internally and can export them to the LinkWare platform.
  3. Report Contents: A typical Fluke single-mode fiber test report includes:
    • Fiber identification and project name
    • Measured optical loss (dB)
    • Connector inspection results (pass/fail grading)
    • Test limits and standards applied
    • Optional distance or fault location if using OTDR or Fiber OneShot PRO
  4. Sharing and Documentation: Reports can be exported as PDF or CSV for project documentation, compliance verification, or client delivery .
