Optical cables used in power lines

The main types of optical cables used on power lines are OPGW, OPPC, OPAC, and ADSS, each designed for specific installation and communication needs.

Optical Ground Wire (OPGW)

OPGW combines grounding and fiber optic communication in a single cable. It is installed at the top of high-voltage transmission towers, serving as both a ground wire to protect against lightning and a conduit for high-speed data transmission . The cable typically contains single-mode optical fibers in a central tube, surrounded by steel and aluminum layers for mechanical strength and conductivity . OPGW is widely used for smart grid communication, SCADA systems, and leasing dark fiber for long-distance data transmission .

Optical Power Phase Conductor (OPPC)

OPPC integrates optical fibers directly into the phase conductors of power lines. Unlike OPGW, which is installed as a separate ground wire, OPPC fibers are embedded within the power-carrying conductors, allowing simultaneous power transmission and communication . The fibers are usually single-mode and protected in a metal tube, surrounded by aluminum conductors and steel strength members. OPPC is suitable for high-voltage lines where space or tower configuration limits separate cable installation.

Optical Power Attached Cable (OPAC)

OPAC is a lightweight, all-dielectric fiber optic cable that is wrapped or lashed around existing power conductors, including OPGW or OPPC, to expand communication capacity . Installation can occur over energized lines using specialized equipment, such as a cable lasher or "Sky-Wrap" system. OPAC cables are designed for spans over 2 km and tower heights exceeding 200 m, with jackets resistant to abrasion, weather, and ice buildup. They typically carry fewer fibers due to size constraints but are flexible and cost-effective for retrofitting existing lines.

All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) Cable

ADSS cables are self-supporting, all-dielectric fiber optic cables that do not conduct electricity, allowing installation near high-voltage lines without interference . They are designed to withstand high-tension loads and can span up to 1 km between supports. ADSS cables are installed below power conductors on transmission towers or utility poles and are suitable for both transmission and distribution systems. Their non-metallic construction prevents electrical hazards and simplifies installation in energized environments.

Summary

  • OPGW: Grounding + fiber, installed at tower tops, metallic sheath, single-mode fibers, high-voltage protection.
  • OPPC: Fibers embedded in phase conductors, combines power and communication, metallic protection.
  • OPAC: Lightweight, wrapped around existing conductors, all-dielectric, flexible for retrofits.
  • ADSS: Self-supporting, all-dielectric, installed below conductors, high-tension capable, safe near energized lines. These cable types have been in use since the 1980s and are essential for modern power line communication, smart grid management, and long-distance data transmission along electrical networks .
