Gigabit Fiber Router Bridging Settings

Bridge mode allows your fiber router to pass the internet connection to a secondary router, disabling its own routing functions to prevent conflicts and optimize network performance.

What is Bridge Mode?

Bridge mode is a network setting that disables the router functionality of your fiber gateway, effectively turning it into a modem-like device that forwards all traffic to another router. This prevents issues caused by having multiple devices performing NAT, DHCP, or firewall functions simultaneously . It is particularly useful when:

  • You want to use a personal router for advanced Wi-Fi, security, or custom network configurations .
  • You have a modem/router combo and need to bypass its built-in routing features .
  • You need to maintain a single subnet across your network for devices and switches . Bridge mode may also be referred to as IP Passthrough or Bypass Mode, which essentially provide the same functionality but with slight differences in configuration options .

When to Enable Bridge Mode

You should enable bridge mode if:

  • You are connecting a personal router to your fiber service and want it to manage Wi-Fi and network settings .
  • You have a custom network setup, such as static IPs or VLANs, that requires the fiber router to pass traffic without interference .
  • You want to extend your network coverage without creating a separate subnet . If your fiber service provides a wall-mounted Fiber Jack, you may not need bridge mode; you can often connect your router directly .

How to Configure Bridge Mode

  1. Access the Router Interface: Log in to your fiber router's web interface using its IP address and administrator credentials .
  2. Locate Bridge Mode Settings: Navigate to the WAN or network settings section and select the option to enable bridge mode .
  3. Disable Routing Functions: Enabling bridge mode will turn off NAT, DHCP, and firewall functions on the fiber router .
  4. Connect Your Router: Use an Ethernet cable to connect the LAN port of the fiber router to the WAN port of your personal router .
  5. Reboot Devices: Restart both the fiber router and your personal router to apply the changes .
  6. Verify Connectivity: Test your internet connection and run speed tests to ensure proper performance .

Network Topology Recommendations

  • Basic Setup: Internet → Fiber Gateway (Bridged) → Personal Router → Devices .
  • With Network Switch: Internet → Fiber Gateway (Bridged) → Router → Switch → Devices and Access Points .
  • Mesh Networks: Internet → Bridged Gateway → Main Mesh Node → Satellite Nodes → Devices .

Considerations

  • Some advanced features of the original router (like parental controls, ad blocking, or VPN services) may be disabled in bridge mode .
  • Only one device should be directly connected to the bridged gateway; all other devices should connect through your personal router or network switch .
  • Bridge mode is intended for more advanced users; incorrect configuration can disrupt network connectivity . By enabling bridge mode correctly, you can maximize network performance, maintain a single subnet, and allow your personal router to fully manage your Wi-Fi and network settings.
