Optocoupler modules like the PC817 require separate power supplies for input and output, with the input side typically powered through a current-limiting resistor and the output side using a pull-up resistor to its own VCC.

Input-Side Power

The input side of an optocoupler module contains an infrared LED that emits light when current flows through it. To operate safely:

  • Voltage: The input voltage should match the LED's forward voltage, typically around 1.2–1.4V for the PC817 LED.
  • Current: Use a current-limiting resistor to control the LED current, usually 5–20 mA depending on the module and application .
  • Activation: Many modules are active LOW, meaning the LED turns on when the input pin is pulled to GND through the signal source .

Output-Side Power

The output side contains a phototransistor that conducts when the LED is illuminated. Key points:

  • Separate VCC: The output side has its own VCC and GND, completely isolated from the input side. Do not connect input and output grounds together, as this defeats isolation .
  • Pull-Up Resistor: The phototransistor is usually configured as an open-collector output, requiring a pull-up resistor to the output VCC. Some modules include a jumper or solder bridge to enable or disable the on-board pull-up resistor .
  • Voltage Range: The output voltage can typically match the logic level of the circuit it drives, often 3.3V or 5V for microcontroller interfaces .

Power Isolation and Safety

  • Galvanic Isolation: The input and output circuits are electrically isolated, allowing signals to pass optically without direct electrical connection, protecting sensitive components from voltage spikes or noise .
  • Independent Channels: Multi-channel modules allow each channel to operate with different input and output voltages simultaneously, maintaining isolation across channels .

Practical Tips

  • Always calculate the current-limiting resistor for the LED using R=VinVLEDILED .
  • Ensure the output pull-up resistor matches the desired logic level and switching speed.
  • Verify the maximum collector-emitter voltage of the phototransistor to avoid exceeding its rating.
  • For high-voltage applications, maintain proper creepage and clearance distances to preserve isolation integrity . By following these guidelines, you can safely power and use optocoupler modules while maintaining electrical isolation between circuits.
