Working principle of optical fiber cable

Optical fiber cables transmit data using light signals guided by the principle of total internal reflection.

Structure of Optical Fiber

An optical fiber consists of three main layers:

  • Core: The central part made of high-purity glass or plastic through which light travels.
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index, keeping light confined within the core.
  • Buffer Coating: A protective layer that shields the fiber from physical damage and moisture . The core and cladding are designed with specific refractive indices to ensure light remains within the core during transmission.

Total Internal Reflection

The fundamental working principle of optical fibers is total internal reflection (TIR). When a light ray enters the fiber, it strikes the boundary between the core and cladding at an angle greater than the critical angle. This causes the light to be completely reflected back into the core, allowing it to zig-zag along the fiber with minimal energy loss . For TIR to occur:

  1. Light must travel from a denser medium (core) to a less dense medium (cladding).
  2. The angle of incidence must exceed the critical angle . This mechanism ensures that light signals, encoded as pulses, can travel long distances without escaping the fiber, enabling high-speed and secure data transmission.

Types of Optical Fibers

Optical fibers are classified based on mode of propagation and refractive index profile:

  • Single-Mode Fibers: Very thin core allowing only one light mode, ideal for long-distance, high-bandwidth applications.
  • Multimode Fibers: Thicker core supporting multiple light modes, suitable for short-distance transmission.
  • Step-Index Fibers: Abrupt change in refractive index between core and cladding.
  • Graded-Index Fibers: Gradual decrease in refractive index from the core center outward .

Advantages and Signal Integrity

Optical fibers offer:

  • High bandwidth and data-carrying capacity.
  • Low attenuation, allowing signals to travel farther without amplification.
  • Immunity to electromagnetic interference, unlike copper cables.
  • Enhanced security, as tapping is difficult. Signal loss can occur due to absorption (impurities in the glass) or scattering (microscopic imperfections), and sharp bends can also cause light to escape . In summary, optical fiber cables efficiently transmit data over long distances by guiding light through the core using total internal reflection, with minimal loss and high reliability.
