Overview

A fiber optic circulator is typically a three- or four-port passive optical device designed to control the direction of light propagation in a fiber optic system. Light entering one port is routed to the next port in a predetermined sequence, while light attempting to travel backward is diverted to a different port, preventing interference with the source signal . For example, in a four-port circulator, light entering Port 1 exits Port 2, light entering Port 2 exits Port 3, and so on .

How It Works

The circulator operates based on non-reciprocal light propagation, often achieved using magneto-optical materials and the Faraday effect. Light passing through a magneto-optical crystal, such as Terbium Gallium Garnet (TGG) or Bismuth-substituted Yttrium Iron Garnet (Bi:YIG), experiences a rotation in polarization. This rotation allows the device to route light in a specific direction while blocking the reverse path . Polarizers and precise optical alignment inside the device ensure minimal insertion loss and high isolation between ports.
