Optical Power Meters

An optical power meter (OPM) is an instrument used to measure the optical power of a light beam, typically in fiber optic systems or laser applications . It consists of a calibrated sensor, a measuring amplifier, and a display. The sensor is usually a photodiode or thermopile, selected for the appropriate wavelength and power range. Users must set the meter to the correct wavelength to ensure accurate readings, as calibration is wavelength-dependent . Optical power meters can be handheld or benchtop devices and are often used with a light source to measure optical loss in fibers, forming an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) . Advanced meters may support multi-channel measurements, high-speed logging, and integration into automated test setups, making them suitable for both laboratory and production environments . They are widely used in telecommunications, CATV, and LAN/WAN fiber networks to measure absolute power, relative power, and insertion loss .

Luminometers

A luminometer is a device that measures light emitted from chemical, biochemical, or biological reactions, often in the form of bioluminescence or chemiluminescence. Unlike optical power meters, which measure the energy of a light beam, luminometers quantify light intensity as a signal proportional to a reaction, commonly used in cell viability assays, ATP detection, and reporter gene assays. Luminometers typically use photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) or photodiodes to detect low levels of light with high sensitivity. Applications of luminometers include:

  • Microbiology and molecular biology: detecting ATP in cells or bacteria.
  • Pharmaceutical research: monitoring enzyme activity or gene expression.
  • Environmental testing: measuring bioluminescent organisms as indicators of contamination.
