Single-fiber optical module parameters

Single-fiber optical modules are configured based on wavelength, transmission rate, distance, optical power, and interface standards to ensure reliable single-mode fiber communication.

Key Parameters

1. Wavelength Selection

  • 1310 nm: Single-mode, moderate loss, low dispersion, suitable for distances up to 40 km.
  • 1550 nm: Single-mode, lower loss but higher dispersion, suitable for long-distance transmission above 40 km, up to 120 km without repeaters.
  • 850 nm: Multi-mode, short-distance (≤500 m), low cost, not typically used for single-mode modules . 2. Transmission Rate
  • Common rates include 155 Mbps, 1.25 Gbps, 2.5 Gbps, and 10 Gbps, with backward compatibility.
  • Higher rates (2–10 Gbps) are used in SANs, data centers, and GPON uplinks . 3. Transmission Distance
  • Single-mode modules support distances of 15 km, 40 km, 80 km, and 120 km, depending on wavelength and optical power . 4. Optical Power and Sensitivity
  • Transmit optical power: Output power of the laser at the module's transmit end.
  • Receive sensitivity: Minimum optical power required at the receiver to maintain a specified bit error rate.
  • Proper configuration ensures the optical link stays within the alarm thresholds for GPON or SFP systems . 5. Fiber Type and Standards
  • Use G.652.D single-mode fiber for maximum compatibility with GPON, DWDM, and 5G fronthaul networks.
  • Ensure compliance with IEC 60793-2-50 and local standards (e.g., YD/T 769 in China) for environmental and mechanical performance . 6. Interface and Module Type
  • SFP modules: LC interface, hot-pluggable, support DDM/DOM for real-time monitoring of temperature, voltage, and Tx/Rx power.
  • GBIC modules: SC interface, older standard.
  • Verify line rate compatibility with host switch or router to avoid link failures . 7. Environmental and Electrical Parameters
  • Working temperature: 0–70°C, storage temperature: -45–80°C.
  • Working voltage: 3.3V, with TTL/PECL/CML/LVDS signaling levels .

Configuration Considerations

  • GPON Systems: Configure uplink FEC and optical threshold alarms to monitor module performance and protect against fiber loss or degradation .
  • Dispersion and Loss: Account for chromatic dispersion and attenuation over the link, especially for long-haul 1550 nm modules .
  • Bend Radius: For indoor or FTTH deployments, consider G.657 variants for improved bend tolerance without affecting transmission .
  • Monitoring: Enable DDM/DOM to track real-time optical parameters and prevent service degradation . By carefully selecting the wavelength, transmission rate, fiber type, and module interface, and configuring optical power thresholds and FEC, single-fiber optical modules can achieve reliable, long-distance, and high-speed communication suitable for GPON, data center, and backbone networks.
