Supporting materials for overhead optical cables

Overhead optical cables are typically constructed from ultra-pure silica cores, protective cladding, strength members, and weather-resistant outer jackets to ensure durability and signal integrity.

Core and Cladding

The core of an optical fiber, which carries light signals, is usually made of ultra-pure silica (SiO₂), often doped with germanium or phosphorus to control the refractive index and optimize light transmission. The cladding, surrounding the core, is also silica but may be doped with fluorine or boron to create a lower refractive index, ensuring total internal reflection and minimal signal loss .

Coatings and Buffering

Each fiber is coated with dual-layer UV-cured acrylate: a soft primary coating for shock absorption and a hard secondary coating for mechanical protection. In overhead cables, fibers may be arranged in loose tubes filled with water-blocking gel or in tight-buffered configurations depending on installation needs .

Strength Members

To withstand tensile stress from aerial installation, overhead cables include strength members such as aramid yarn (Kevlar), fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), or steel wires. These materials prevent fiber elongation during installation and protect against wind, ice, and mechanical strain .

Outer Sheath and Environmental Protection

The outer jacket is made from UV-resistant polymers like high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to resist sunlight, moisture, and temperature variations. Some overhead cables also include metallic components for grounding or additional mechanical protection . Water-blocking elements, such as gels or tapes, are used to prevent moisture ingress, which is critical for long-term reliability .

Additional Features

Overhead cables may incorporate messenger wires or support strands to suspend the cable between poles. Some designs include ribbon matrices or micro-additives like glass flakes or borates to enhance durability and reduce environmental degradation . In summary, overhead optical cables combine high-purity optical materials for signal transmission with mechanical and environmental protection layers, ensuring long-term performance in outdoor aerial installations.
