FC Fiber Optic Connector

The FC (Ferrule Connector) is a threaded fiber optic connector designed for secure, low-loss connections in high-vibration and precision applications.

Overview

The FC connector is a fiber-optic connector with a screw-on threaded body, originally developed by NTT in the late 1970s as the "Field-Assembly Connector" and later standardized under TIA/EIA-604-4 and IEC 61754-13 . It is commonly used with single-mode, multimode, and polarization-maintaining fibers and is ideal for environments requiring stable, vibration-resistant connections, such as telecom, CATV, industrial networks, test equipment, and military applications .

Design Features

  • Ferrule: Typically 2.5 mm, made of ceramic (zirconia) or stainless steel, with the fiber end polished for physical contact (PC), ultra physical contact (UPC), or angled physical contact (APC) .
  • Threaded Coupling: Ensures a secure connection that resists accidental disconnection and vibration .
  • Keying: Prevents fiber rotation during mating, critical for polarization-maintaining fibers .
  • Spring-Loaded Ferrule: Controls mating force to minimize insertion loss and back-reflection .
  • Active Core Alignment (ACA): Some high-performance FC connectors use ACA technology to reduce core eccentricity and improve optical alignment .

Polish Types

  • PC (Physical Contact): Slightly curved end-face, standard for digital signals.
  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Tighter polish, lower insertion loss and return loss (~50 dB), suitable for most digital and analog systems.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): 8° angled end-face, minimizes back-reflection (~60 dB), ideal for RF, CATV, and analog video applications .

Applications

  • Telecommunications: Long-haul networks, ODF frames, and core telecom systems.
  • Test & Measurement: OTDRs, optical power meters, and lab equipment.
  • Industrial & Harsh Environments: High-vibration or outdoor installations.
  • Specialty Fibers: Polarization-maintaining, low-wavelength, high-temperature, and VIS/NIR fibers .

Advantages

  • Durable and secure: Threaded design prevents accidental disconnection.
  • Low insertion loss: High-quality ferrules and polish reduce signal loss.
  • Vibration-resistant: Suitable for industrial and military applications.
  • Versatile: Compatible with single-mode, multimode, and specialty fibers .

Considerations

  • Installation speed: Slower than push-pull connectors like LC or SC due to screw-on design.
  • High-density limitations: Less suitable for dense patch panels.
  • Compatibility: FC/PC and FC/APC connectors are not interchangeable; mating an APC to a PC connector can cause high insertion loss .

FC connectors remain a reliable choice for precision, high-vibration, and long-term stable fiber connections, though LC and SC connectors are increasingly used in high-density modern networks .
