How to determine the core switch model

You can identify your core switch model using CLI commands, network mapping tools, or management interfaces like Cisco APIC GUI.

Identifying the Core Switch

A core switch is typically the high-capacity, high-performance Layer 3 switch at the backbone of your network, aggregating traffic from distribution switches and connecting to routers or firewalls . To locate it:

  • Check network topology: The core switch usually connects to most other switches or serves as the gateway for traffic leaving the LAN .
  • Use default gateway information: On a PC, run ipconfig and note the default gateway; the switch connected to this gateway is often the core .
  • Map switch connections: Use show cdp neighbors or show cdp neighbors detail on Cisco devices to see which switches are interconnected. The switch aggregating the most connections is likely the core .

Finding the Switch Model

Once the core switch is identified, you can determine its model using several methods:

  • CLI (Command Line Interface): On Cisco NX-OS or IOS devices, commands like show version or show inventory display the switch model, serial number, and hardware details .
  • Cisco APIC GUI: Navigate to Fabric > Inventory, select the Pod, then click the switch icon. The work pane will show the switch model and serial number .
  • REST API: For automated inventory, Cisco APIC provides REST API endpoints to query switch models and serial numbers .

Additional Tips

  • Check for redundancy: Core switches often have dual power supplies, modular fans, and support for HSRP/VRRP for high availability .
  • Network mapping tools: Cisco and other vendors offer free tools to visualize switch topology, which helps confirm which switch functions as the core .
  • Collapsed core networks: In smaller networks, a single switch may serve both core and distribution roles, so the “core” may not be a dedicated device . By combining topology analysis, CLI commands, and management interfaces, you can accurately identify both the core switch and its model for documentation or maintenance purposes.
