Overview

A fiber optic switch (sometimes referred to as a switching disc in certain mechanical or MEMS implementations) is used to control the path of light within a fiber optic system. It can either pass, block, or redirect optical signals between multiple fibers, allowing dynamic reconfiguration of optical networks or experimental setups .

Types of Fiber Optic Switches

  1. Mechanical Switches These switches physically move fiber ends, mirrors, or prisms to redirect light. They can be manual or motorized, and are often used in laboratory setups or low-speed switching applications .
  2. MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) Switches MEMS switches use tiny mirrors to redirect light electronically.
