Poland's enterprise and carrier networks are now deploying 400G optical routers using Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Nano ZR+ coherent pluggable modules, enabling high-capacity, multi-vendor, and energy-efficient transport.
Polish network operator EXATEL has implemented Ciena's WaveLogic 5 Nano (WL5n) 400G ZR+ coherent pluggable transceivers across its 23,800-kilometer fiber-optic network, connecting major Polish cities to European interconnection hubs such as London, Frankfurt, Stockholm, Vienna, and Paris . This deployment represents the first disaggregated, software-defined optical network architecture in Poland, allowing EXATEL to integrate multiple router vendors while delivering high-speed, energy-efficient services . The WL5n modules consume less than 20W per module and support multi-rate interoperability from 100G to 400G, making them suitable for access, metro-regional, and data center interconnect (DCI) applications .
400G ZR modules are designed for high-density, point-to-point DCI applications, supporting 400 Gb/s over up to 40 km on a single fiber without amplification, and up to 120 km with external amplification . 400G ZR+ modules extend this capability with high-gain forward error correction (FEC), flexible 100G–400G line rates, and multiple modulation formats (QPSK, 8QAM, 16QAM), achieving distances up to 600–750 km with external amplification and multiple ROADM hops . These modules are ideal for metro, regional edge, and core network applications, providing pluggable router interfaces that simplify deployment and reduce the need for external transport equipment .
The OpenZR+ standard enables small form-factor pluggable coherent modules to support multi-vendor interoperability, higher dispersion tolerance, and extended reach for hyperscale data center and carrier networks . By using QSFP-DD or OSFP form factors, OpenZR+ modules allow operators to eliminate external transport equipment, reduce costs, and scale bandwidth efficiently. This architecture supports edge, regional, and long-haul interconnects, making it suitable for enterprise-grade deployments in Poland and across Europe .
Ciena's coherent routing solutions, including the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform and Waveserver family, integrate 400G coherent optics into multi-layer, multi-vendor networks . These routers support segment routing, EVPN, SDN, and time synchronization, enabling dynamic scaling and optimization of network performance. The combination of pluggable 400G ZR+ modules and coherent routers allows Polish enterprises and carriers to meet growing bandwidth demands while maintaining energy efficiency and operational flexibility .
Polish enterprise-grade 400G optical routers leverage pluggable coherent optics (400ZR/400ZR+) and disaggregated, software-defined architectures to deliver high-capacity, energy-efficient, and multi-vendor interoperable networks. Key benefits include:
This technology positions Poland's networks to support enterprise, public institution, and hyperscale data center connectivity with scalable, sustainable, and future-proof optical infrastructure .
