Overview of Cold Aisle Layout

In a cold aisle configuration, the fronts of server racks face each other, forming a corridor known as the cold aisle. Conditioned air is delivered into this aisle, typically through perforated floor tiles in raised floor systems or via overhead ducting, depending on the facility design . Servers draw in this cold air through their front intakes, absorb heat, and expel warm air from the back into the adjacent hot aisle . This separation of hot and cold air prevents mixing, which is critical for maintaining consistent server inlet temperatures and avoiding hotspots .

Cold Aisle Containment

Cold aisle containment (CAC) enhances the basic cold aisle layout by enclosing the cold aisle with physical barriers, such as doors, panels, or overhead covers, to prevent cold air from escaping and hot air from entering . This approach allows the room temperature to be slightly higher while still maintaining adequate cooling at the server intakes, improving overall energy efficiency . CAC can be implemented with or without raised floors and is suitable for retrofitting existing data centers . Studies have shown that cold aisle containment can reduce cooling-related energy costs by up to 30% and significantly lower the electricity required to move cold air .

Integration with Cooling Systems

Cold aisle design works in tandem with CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) or CRAH (Computer Room Air Handling) units. These units supply conditioned air into the cold aisle, either through a raised floor plenum or overhead ducts . Proper placement of return air ducts in the hot aisle ensures that warm air is efficiently returned to the cooling units, allowing for slower fan speeds, increased free cooling opportunities, and reduced chiller energy use .

Practical Considerations

  • Rack Orientation: Ensure all server fronts face the cold aisle and backs face the hot aisle. Avoid solid doors on racks; perforated doors improve airflow .
  • Aisle Width: Maintain sufficient width for personnel access while minimizing air leakage.
  • Containment Retrofit: Cold aisle containment can be added to existing layouts with minimal downtime and structural changes .
  • Temperature Management: Supply air temperatures can be increased to around 17°C and return air temperatures to 27°C, improving energy efficiency without compromising server performance .
  • Energy Savings: Combining cold aisle containment with variable speed fans and economizers can reduce fan energy use by 20–25% and chiller energy use by 20% .
