Insertion Loss Overview

Insertion loss (IL), also called attenuation, is the reduction of optical power as light passes through a fiber optic connector. It is caused by misalignment, air gaps, surface imperfections, and contamination in the connector components. Lower IL values indicate better performance and higher signal integrity, which is critical for maintaining efficient data transmission in fiber optic systems .

Typical Loss Values

  • Single-mode connectors: Recommended IL is typically below 0.3 dB .
  • Multimode connectors: Recommended IL is usually below 0.5 dB .
  • Mechanical or prepolished splice connectors: Loss can be higher, up to 0.75 dB per EIA/TIA 568 standards .
  • Fusion splices: Typically very low loss, around 0.15 dB for single-mode fibers .

Factors Affecting Optical Loss

  1. Connector Type and Design: Butt-joint connectors (straight-sleeve, bi-conical) rely on precise ferrule alignment, while lensed connectors use a lens to collimate light, reducing sensitivity to misalignment .
  2. Ferrule Quality: Zirconia ceramic ferrules with tight concentricity and controlled inner diameters minimize lateral misalignment and reduce IL .
  3. Fiber Alignment: Lateral misalignment is the primary contributor to loss, more so than longitudinal gaps or angular misalignment .
  4. Surface Condition: Scratches, dirt, or contamination on fiber end faces can significantly increase IL .
  5. Return Loss (RL): High RL (low back reflection) is desirable. Single-mode connectors typically require >50 dB, while multimode connectors require >20 dB .

Measurement and Testing

Insertion loss is measured using optical power meters, light sources, or OTDRs. Testing can be done single-ended (FOTP-171) or double-ended (OFSTP-14), and the loss budget should include all connectors and splices in the link . Proper cleaning and inspection of connectors before testing are essential to achieve low IL.
