Techniques and Methods for Using Fusion Coat

Fusion Coat, including Tough Coat or wax, should be applied in thin, even layers on a clean, dry surface, allowing proper drying between coats for maximum durability and a smooth finish.

Surface Preparation

Before applying Fusion Coat, ensure the surface is clean, dry, and free of dust, grease, or old residues. Lightly sanding previously painted or glossy surfaces improves adhesion. For high-traffic items like tables or cabinets, extra protection with Fusion Tough Coat or wax is recommended .

Choosing the Right Topcoat

  • Tough Coat: A water-based, non-yellowing sealant ideal for kitchen cabinets, tabletops, or outdoor furniture. It forms a hard, protective barrier resistant to water, heat, and scratches .
  • Wax: Provides a soft, matte finish and enhances paint depth. Best for decorative pieces or indoor furniture, but requires periodic reapplication for high-use surfaces .

Application Steps for Tough Coat

  1. Prepare the product: Gently roll the container to mix; avoid shaking to prevent air bubbles .
  2. Tools: Use a slightly humid Staalmeester roller, applicator sponge, synthetic brush, or sprayer .
  3. Apply thin coats: Spread evenly from end to end to prevent streaks. For low humidity, add an extender to slow drying .
  4. Drying time: Allow 2–4 hours between coats. Two coats are usually sufficient; three may be needed for heavily used surfaces .
  5. Optional effects: Tough Coat can be tinted with paint or metallics for shimmer or gloss finishes .

Application Steps for Wax

  1. Use a clean, lint-free cloth or wax brush to apply a thin, even layer .
  2. Let it dry for 15–30 minutes, then buff to the desired sheen.
  3. Reapply every 6–12 months on high-use surfaces to maintain protection .
  4. For a distressed look, apply wax before distressing to control paint removal .

Additional Tips

  • Apply thin, even coats to avoid drips or cloudiness .
  • Allow at least 24 hours after painting before applying a topcoat to ensure full curing .
  • Clean brushes and rollers immediately with soap and warm water .
  • For dark colors, consider using SFO or Ultra Guard to prevent cloudiness . Following these steps ensures a durable, smooth, and professional finish with Fusion Coat, whether using Tough Coat for high-traffic surfaces or wax for decorative pieces.
