Function of Through-beam Fiber Optic Sensors

Through-beam fiber optic sensors detect objects by transmitting a light beam from an emitter to a separate receiver, triggering detection when the beam is interrupted, and are widely used in high-precision industrial applications.

Working Principle

Through-beam fiber optic sensors consist of two main components: an emitter and a receiver, housed separately. The emitter sends a continuous light beam to the receiver. When an object passes between the emitter and receiver, it interrupts the light beam, signaling the presence of the object. This configuration allows for long sensing distances and high detection reliability, although precise alignment of the emitter and receiver is required for optimal performance . In fiber optic implementations, the light is transmitted through optical fibers, which can be configured in arrays for multi-point detection. The fibers guide the light to and from the sensing area, allowing detection of very small objects, sometimes as small as 0.04 mm, over a measurement range of 6 mm to 120 mm . The use of fiber optics also enables operation in harsh environments, including areas with high vibration, moisture, or chemical exposure, because the sensing heads contain no electronic components .

Advantages

  • High precision and sensitivity for detecting small or fast-moving objects.
  • Flexibility in installation, including front and side detection options.
  • Durability in harsh industrial conditions due to robust sensor head materials like stainless steel.
  • Compatibility with standard fiber optic amplifiers, allowing integration into existing systems .

Applications

Through-beam fiber optic sensors are widely used across multiple industries:

  • Electronics Manufacturing: Detecting small components on assembly lines.
  • Packaging Inspection: Ensuring correct placement and presence of items in packaging processes.
  • Automotive Production: Monitoring parts and assembly operations for quality control.
  • Industrial Automation: High-speed detection in automated production lines.
  • Food and Pharmaceutical Processing: Reliable detection in environments requiring hygiene and resistance to washdowns . These sensors are particularly valuable in high-precision detection scenarios, where both micro-level measurements and large-area coverage are required. Their fast signal transmission ensures real-time detection, making them ideal for high-speed production lines .

Summary

Through-beam fiber optic sensors combine the long-range detection capability of through-beam photoelectric sensors with the robustness and flexibility of fiber optic technology, making them essential tools in modern industrial automation, quality control, and precision manufacturing applications .
