Optical Cable Construction

The core, typically less than 9 microns for single-mode fibers, is the central channel for light transmission, while multimode fibers have larger cores (50–100 microns) for short-distance communication . Surrounding the core is the cladding, which reflects light back into the core using total internal reflection, ensuring minimal signal loss. A coating layer of plastic or polymer protects the fiber from mechanical stress and environmental damage, with thickness ranging from 250 to 900 microns . The fibers are bundled and reinforced with materials like Kevlar® or gel-filled sleeves to provide tensile strength and prevent crushing. The outer jacket protects against moisture, abrasion, and chemical exposure, often color-coded for identification . Optical cables can be designed as single-mode for long-distance, high-bandwidth transmission or multimode for shorter distances. Hybrid optical/metallic cables combine fibers with metallic wires for power feeding or telecommunication, following standards such as ITU-T L.109 .

Electrical Cable Construction

Electrical cables primarily use metallic conductors, usually copper or aluminum, to transmit electrical signals. The conductor may be solid or stranded to balance flexibility and conductivity. Surrounding the conductor is an insulation layer, typically made of PVC, polyethylene, or cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), which prevents short circuits and protects against electrical leakage. For additional protection, cables may include shielding (braided or foil) to reduce electromagnetic interference (EMI) and jackets to protect against mechanical damage, moisture, and chemical exposure. Electrical cables vary by type: twisted pair cables reduce crosstalk in data transmission, coaxial cables provide high-frequency signal integrity, and power cables are designed to handle high current loads safely.
