Function and Principle of Fiber Bragg Gratings

Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) function as wavelength-specific reflectors, optical filters, and highly sensitive sensors for strain, temperature, and other physical parameters.

Optical Filtering and Reflection

FBGs are segments of optical fiber with a periodic variation in the refractive index of the core, which reflects specific wavelengths of light while transmitting others . This property allows FBGs to act as inline optical filters, selectively blocking or reflecting certain wavelengths in fiber-optic communication systems. They are also used as mirrors in narrow-linewidth fiber lasers, such as distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) and distributed feedback (DFB) lasers, to stabilize and define the laser wavelength .

Dispersion Management

Specialized FBGs, such as chirped gratings, have a varying grating period along the fiber length. This introduces a wavelength-dependent delay, enabling dispersion compensation in optical networks and pulse stretching or compression in ultrafast laser systems . Apodized gratings suppress spectral sidelobes, improving signal quality, while tilted gratings can create notch filters for selective wavelength rejection .

Sensing Applications

FBGs are widely used as fiber-optic sensors due to their sensitivity to environmental changes. When an FBG experiences strain, temperature, or pressure, the spacing between the reflection points changes, shifting the reflected wavelength. This shift can be precisely measured to determine the physical parameter, making FBGs ideal for structural health monitoring, aerospace, environmental, and biochemical applications . They are immune to electromagnetic interference and can operate in harsh or explosive environments, providing reliable long-term monitoring .

Other Applications

FBGs are also used for gain flattening in fiber amplifiers, wavelength stabilization in laser diodes, and polarization-selective reflection in specialized gratings like polarization volume gratings . Long-period gratings, a variant of FBGs, couple co-propagating waves and are used for gain equalization rather than reflection . In summary, FBGs serve multiple functions: they act as precise optical filters and reflectors, manage chromatic dispersion, and provide highly sensitive measurements of strain, temperature, and other physical parameters, making them versatile components in both telecommunications and sensing technologies .
