Network optical cables are a type of cabling used in modern telecommunications and computer networks to transmit data using light signals instead of electrical signals . This technology, known as fiber optics, allows for high bandwidth, low latency, and long-distance transmission without the signal degradation common in copper cables . Optical cables are essential for backbone networks, internet infrastructure, and high-performance data centers.

Structure of Optical Cables

A typical fiber optic cable consists of several layers:

  • Core: The central, transparent fiber that carries light signals. Core diameters vary from 5 µm to 100 µm depending on the fiber type .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index, reflecting light back into the core through total internal reflection, ensuring minimal signal loss .
  • Buffer Coating: A protective layer made of plastic or silicone that shields the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors .
  • Outer Jacket: Provides additional protection and durability for installation in various environments.

Types of Fiber Optic Cables

  1. Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Allows only one light mode to propagate, ideal for long-distance, high-speed communication. It has a small core (~5 µm) and minimal signal dispersion .
  2. Multi-Mode Fiber (MMF): Supports multiple light modes, suitable for shorter distances like within buildings or campuses. Core diameters are larger (50–62.5 µm), but signal dispersion limits distance .

Optical cables are used in optical networks, where data is converted from electrical signals to light via optical transceivers. The light travels through the fiber to the receiving end, where it is converted back to electrical signals . Key advantages include:
