Components

An optical module typically consists of the following components :

  • Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA): Contains a laser diode (LD) or light-emitting diode (LED) that converts electrical signals into modulated light signals.
  • Receiver Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA): Contains a photodetector that converts incoming optical signals back into electrical signals.
  • Driver and Amplifier Circuits: Process electrical signals for transmission and amplify received signals.
  • Optical and Electrical Interfaces: Connect the module to fiber cables and network devices.

Working Principle

At the transmitting end, the driver chip processes the electrical signal and drives the laser or LED to emit a modulated optical signal .
