Source of optical fiber cable

Optical fiber cables are primarily made from ultra-pure silica (glass) or specialized plastics, which form the core and cladding that transmit light signals.

Raw Materials

The main source of optical fiber is silica (silicon dioxide), chosen for its high purity and excellent light transmission properties. Silica is refined and formed into large glass rods called preforms, which serve as the starting material for fiber production . For plastic optical fibers, materials like polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) are used for the core, providing flexibility and ease of manufacturing .

Fiber Components

A fiber optic cable consists of three primary components:

  • Core: The central part of the fiber where light travels, made of glass or plastic, typically 50–125 microns in diameter .
  • Cladding: Surrounds the core and has a lower refractive index to ensure total internal reflection, keeping light within the core .
  • Buffer/Coating: Protective layers of polymer or resin that shield the fiber from physical damage and environmental factors .

Manufacturing Process

  1. Preform Creation: Ultra-pure silica particles are deposited and fused into a solid or hollow glass rod. This preform is essentially a scaled-up version of the fiber .
  2. Fiber Drawing: The preform is heated to around 2,000°C, and a thin strand of glass is drawn from it, forming the optical fiber .
  3. Coating and Cabling: The drawn fiber is coated with protective layers and bundled into cables with additional sheathing for durability and environmental protection .

Types of Fiber

  • Single-mode fiber: Has a small core, allowing one light path, ideal for long-distance communication .
  • Multimode fiber: Has a larger core, supporting multiple light paths, suitable for short-distance transmission . In summary, the source of optical fiber cable is primarily high-purity silica for glass fibers or specialized plastics for polymer fibers, which are processed into cores, cladding, and protective layers to form the final cable used in telecommunications, data networks, and other high-speed applications .
