Definition and Purpose

An access port is a switch port that connects directly to end devices and is assigned to a single VLAN. It strips any VLAN tags from incoming frames and only forwards traffic for the VLAN it is assigned to, ensuring that the connected device belongs to a specific broadcast domain . This simplifies network management and enhances security by isolating traffic between VLANs.

Key Characteristics

  • Single VLAN Assignment: Each access port can carry traffic for only one VLAN. By default, all switch ports are assigned to VLAN 1 unless configured otherwise .
  • No VLAN Tagging: Frames sent from an access port are untagged, and any tagged frames that do not match the port's VLAN are dropped .
  • End Device Connectivity: Access ports are used to connect devices such as PCs, printers, IP phones, or servers that do not need to be aware of VLANs .
  • Broadcast Domain: All devices connected to access ports within the same VLAN share a single broadcast domain, which helps contain broadcast traffic and improve network performance .

Configuration on Cisco Switches

To configure a switch port as an access port on a Cisco switch:

  1. Enter interface configuration mode:

    interface FastEthernet0/2

  2. Set the port to access mode:

    switchport mode access

  3. Assign the VLAN:

    switchport access vlan 2

This ensures the port only carries traffic for VLAN 2 and does not participate in trunking . If no VLAN is specified, the port defaults to VLAN 1.

Comparison with Trunk Ports

Unlike trunk ports, which carry traffic for multiple VLANs and use 802.1Q tagging to differentiate VLANs, access ports are limited to a single VLAN and do not tag outgoing frames . Trunk ports are typically used for switch-to-switch connections, while access ports are for end devices.
