Fiber Optic FP Temperature Sensor

Fabry-Pérot (FP) fiber optic sensors measure temperature by detecting spectral shifts in an optical cavity, offering high sensitivity, compact size, and immunity to electromagnetic interference.

Working Principle

FP fiber optic temperature sensors operate using a Fabry-Pérot interferometer, where light reflects between two parallel surfaces forming a cavity. Temperature changes alter the cavity length or refractive index, causing measurable shifts in the interference fringes. These shifts are then converted into temperature readings, enabling precise monitoring in various environments .

Types of FP Cavities

  1. Ultraviolet Glue-Filled FP Cavity: A hollow capillary fiber is filled with UV glue and fusion-spliced to a single-mode fiber. This design provides high sensitivity (up to 1.174 nm/°C) in the 30–60°C range, is pressure-insensitive, and suitable for marine and environmental monitoring .
  2. Air-Filled FP Cavity: Constructed by splicing a fused-silica tube with single-mode and side-hole fibers, allowing pressure-controlled spectral shifts. This system achieves high-resolution temperature measurements (±0.32°C) and can operate up to 800°C, with excellent stability under thermal cycling .
  3. Sapphire FP Cavity: Designed for ultra-high temperatures (>1000°C), using a sapphire cavity mounted on an alumina tube. It maintains stability within ±1°C at 1100°C and can resolve temperature changes below 0.5°C at 1300°C, making it ideal for industrial and nuclear applications .

Advantages

  • High Sensitivity and Resolution: Capable of detecting minute temperature changes due to precise spectral fringe shifts .
  • Compact and Flexible: Small size allows integration into confined or harsh environments.
  • Electromagnetic Immunity: Optical sensing avoids interference from electrical noise.
  • Wide Temperature Range: Depending on cavity material, FP sensors can operate from room temperature to nearly 2000°C .
  • Remote Sensing Capability: Fiber optics allow measurements over long distances without signal degradation.

Applications

  • Marine and Environmental Monitoring: Real-time water temperature tracking using glue-filled FP sensors .
  • Industrial High-Temperature Processes: Combustion monitoring, molten glass production, and steel manufacturing using sapphire FP sensors .
  • Scientific Research: High-resolution temperature measurements in laboratory and harsh environments . FP fiber optic temperature sensors are versatile, offering high accuracy, durability, and adaptability across a wide range of temperatures and applications, making them a preferred choice for both research and industrial monitoring.
