Duct Preparation

Ducts can be made of plastic (PVC/HDPE), steel, concrete, or fiberglass-reinforced plastic, chosen based on environmental conditions and protection requirements . Supports, brackets, and hangers should be securely anchored to prevent sagging, and any cut surfaces should be deburred to avoid damaging the cable . Ensure the duct path is level and free of sharp bends that could exceed the cable's minimum bend radius .

Cable Handling Precautions

Fiber optic cables are sensitive to excessive pulling, bending, and crushing forces. Always follow the cable manufacturer's specifications for maximum tensile load and minimum bend radius. For example, a cable with a 0.46-inch diameter may require a minimum working bend radius of 6.9 inches during installation .   • Involves pushing the cable a few hundred meters into the duct using a tractor mechanism, then injecting compressed air to float the cable along the duct.
  • Reduces friction between the cable and duct wall, allowing longer continuous runs (over 1000 meters for microduct cables).
  • Cable stiffness affects performance: stiffer cables blow faster through straight sections, while flexible cables navigate complex routes better.
  • Perform a crash test on a short duct section to determine the maximum pushing force without damaging the cable .

  • Always disconnect active optical sources before handling fiber.
  • Maintain proper bend radius throughout the installation.
  • Use rollers or pull wheels sized according to the cable's bend radius to prevent damage.
  • Monitor cable tension and avoid exceeding manufacturer limits.
