Emission frequency and sensitivity of optical module

Optical modules emit light at specific wavelengths with bandwidths typically ranging from several GHz to tens of GHz, and their sensitivity is defined by the minimum optical power detectable at a given bit error rate.

Emission Frequency and Bandwidth

Optical modules use a Transmitter Optical Sub-Assembly (TOSA), usually containing a laser diode (LD) or LED, to convert electrical signals into optical signals. The emission frequency is determined by the modulation rate of the laser and the wavelength of the light source. For high-speed modules, the −3 dB bandwidth of each channel can exceed 20 GHz, allowing data rates up to tens of Gbit/s per channel . Multi-channel modules may have channel wavelength spacing of approximately 1 nm to minimize crosstalk . The emission frequency is also influenced by the modulation technique, such as on-off keying (OOK), M-PAM, or M-QAM, which affects spectral efficiency and signal integrity .

Receiver Sensitivity

Receiver sensitivity refers to the minimum average optical power that the Receiving Optical Sub-Assembly (ROSA) can detect while maintaining a specified bit error rate (BER), commonly 10^-12 . Sensitivity is measured in dBm, and higher data rates generally require higher received optical power due to increased signal-to-noise ratio demands. If the received optical power falls below the sensitivity threshold, the module may fail to detect signals correctly. Conversely, exceeding the overload optical power can also cause errors due to signal saturation .

Additional Performance Considerations

  • Noise Figure (NF): High-gain optical modules integrate low-noise amplifiers (LNA) to maintain a noise figure below 30 dB, improving signal detection .
  • Temperature Stability: Modules are designed to operate across wide ambient ranges (e.g., −55 °C to 75 °C) without significant performance degradation .
  • Electromagnetic Interference (EMI): Optical modules generate minimal EMI individually, but cumulative effects in large systems must be considered for compliance with standards . In summary, the emission frequency of an optical module is defined by its laser source and modulation bandwidth, while sensitivity is the minimum optical power the receiver can detect reliably. Both parameters are critical for ensuring high-speed, low-error optical communication.
