Optical Splitters Overview

Optical splitters are passive components used in Passive Optical Networks (PONs) to divide a single optical signal from an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) into multiple outputs for Optical Network Terminals (ONTs) at subscriber locations . They operate without electricity, active electronics, or switching mechanisms, making them cost-efficient and maintenance-free . Common splitter types include:

  • PLC (Planar Lightwave Circuit) splitters: Highly uniform, suitable for large splits like 1:32 or 1:64 .
  • FBT (Fused Biconical Taper) splitters: Low-cost, ideal for small splits like 1:2 or 1:4 . Splitters are deployed in centralized or distributed architectures, often in closures, cabinets, or wall-mounted enclosures, depending on network design and subscriber density .

Optical Cross-Connects (OXC) Overview

An Optical Cross-Connect (OXC) is an active switching device that dynamically routes optical signals between fibers without converting them to electrical signals . OXCs use photonic switching fabrics to direct wavelength channels and are controlled electronically, often via SDN controllers, enabling flexible, protocol-transparent routing in telecom backbones and data centers . Unlike splitters, OXCs require power and can reconfigure paths dynamically.

Key Difference

The main distinction is that optical splitters are passive and static, simply dividing light into multiple paths, whereas OXCs are active and dynamic, capable of switching signals between fibers. Therefore, optical splitters do not use XC interfaces; they function independently of OXC technology and are not designed for dynamic routing .
