VLAN Segmentation

To connect devices across different network segments, you first need to create VLANs on the switches. Each VLAN represents a separate broadcast domain, isolating traffic for security and performance purposes. Hosts within the same VLAN can communicate directly, but communication between VLANs requires routing. Huawei switches support IEEE 802.1Q VLAN tagging, which allows multiple VLANs to traverse the same physical link while keeping traffic logically separated .

Layer 2 vs Layer 3 Switches

  • Layer 2 switches forward traffic based on MAC addresses and cannot route between VLANs. To enable inter-VLAN communication, a router or Layer 3 switch is required .
  • Layer 3 switches combine switching and routing capabilities. They can assign IP addresses to VLAN interfaces (VLANIF) and route traffic between VLANs directly, eliminating the need for an external router .

Routing Between Network Segments

There are two main approaches to enable communication between VLANs or subnets:

  1. Static Routes
    • Configure a static route on each switch specifying the destination network, subnet mask, outbound interface, next hop, and priority .
    • Ensure bidirectional routes are configured so that traffic can flow both ways between devices on different segments.
    • Static routes are suitable for small, stable networks and can also support load balancing or active/standby links in more complex setups .
  2. Dynamic Routing Protocols
    • Protocols like OSPF or RIP allow switches to automatically adapt to network topology changes.
    • Dynamic routing is more complex and resource-intensive but is ideal for large or frequently changing networks .

Configuration Steps (Typical Example)

  1. Create VLANs on each switch and assign ports to the appropriate VLAN.
  2. Assign IP addresses to VLANIF interfaces on Layer 3 switches.
  3. Set default gateways on hosts to the VLANIF IP addresses.
  4. Configure static or dynamic routes on the switches to enable inter-VLAN communication.
  5. Verify connectivity using ping or traceroute between hosts on different network segments .

Practical Considerations

  • Limit broadcast domains to improve network efficiency.
  • Use Layer 3 switches for core and aggregation layers to simplify routing and reduce latency.
  • Ensure security by controlling which VLANs can communicate and applying access control lists if needed.
  • For multi-vendor environments, ensure VLAN tagging standards (802.1Q) are compatible .
