How to install a fiber optic splice box

Installing a fiber optic splice box involves careful cable preparation, secure mounting, precise splicing, organized tray management, and proper sealing to ensure long-term network performance.

Step 1: Cable Preparation

Begin by removing the outer jacket of the fiber optic cable, including any shielding or armor, to expose the loose tubes. Leave approximately 3 meters of cable for preparation. Clean the fibers and strength members using a suitable cleaning solution, remove excess filling, and abrade the outer jacket for about 150 mm to ensure proper sealing . Strip the protective coatings from individual fibers using specialized fiber strippers and clean them with lint-free wipes and isopropyl alcohol .

Step 2: Mounting the Splice Box

Select the appropriate splice closure type (dome, inline, or horizontal) based on the installation environment (aerial, underground, or indoor). Use the provided fixing points to mount the enclosure securely. For concrete surfaces, use expanding bolts; for steel frames, use appropriately sized bolts with anti-vibration washers . Ensure the closure is properly supported and positioned for easy access during maintenance.

Step 3: Cable Entry and Sealing

Insert the prepared cable into the designated entry port of the splice box. Choose sealing rings that match the cable diameter and place them on the cable. Wrap self-adhesive sealing tape between the rings to create a watertight seal. Secure the cable to the base of the closure using clamps or hose clamps to prevent movement and strain .

Step 4: Fiber Splicing

Perform fiber splicing using either fusion splicing (melting fiber ends together for permanent low-loss connections) or mechanical splicing (aligning fibers with a splice holder and index gel). Fusion splicing is preferred for minimal signal loss (<0.1 dB) and high tensile strength, while mechanical splicing is faster and requires less equipment . After splicing, place the fibers into splice trays, coiling any excess fiber neatly to maintain bending radius limits and organized management .

Step 5: Tray and Closure Management

Stack splice trays according to the closure's capacity, ensuring easy access for maintenance. Close the trays securely and cover them with the lid, locking it into position. Apply heat-shrink tubing or mechanical gaskets to reinforce and protect the spliced areas. Ensure all entry points are sealed to prevent dust and moisture ingress .

Step 6: Testing and Maintenance

After installation, perform optical testing to verify splice quality and signal integrity. Regularly inspect the splice box for water ingress, physical damage, or fiber strain. Periodic maintenance ensures long-term functionality and prevents network disruptions . By following these steps, a fiber optic splice box can be installed securely, maintaining high performance, durability, and ease of future maintenance.
