PoE Standards and Power Output

  • PoE (IEEE 802.3af, Type 1): Supplies up to 15.4 watts per port, with 12.95W guaranteed at the powered device (PD). Suitable for low-power devices such as VoIP phones, basic IP cameras, and sensors .
  • PoE+ (IEEE 802.3at, Type 2): Provides up to 30 watts per port, with 25W minimum at the PD, supporting devices like PTZ cameras, Wi-Fi access points, and alarm systems .
  • PoE++ (IEEE 802.3bt, Type 3): Delivers up to 60 watts per port, ideal for high-power devices such as advanced cameras, small computers, and LED lighting .
  • UPoE / PoE++ Type 4 (IEEE 802.3bt, Type 4): Offers up to 100 watts per port, enabling power-hungry devices like multi-radio access points, building automation systems, and remote patient monitoring devices .

Voltage and Cabling

  • Standard PoE operates at 44–57V, PoE+ at 50–57V, and PoE++/UPoE at 52–57V .
  • Power is transmitted over Cat5e, Cat6, or higher Ethernet cables, with 4-pair PoE (4PPoE) allowing higher wattage delivery by using all four twisted pairs .

Practical Considerations
