Installation of high-voltage arc-extinguishing plate in distribution box

High-voltage arc-extinguishing plates must be installed in a structured, insulated, and properly spaced arrangement within the distribution box to safely manage arc faults.

Plate Arrangement and Alignment

Arc-extinguishing plates are typically arranged in parallel between two arc guide rails inside the circuit breaker or distribution box. Each plate is held at a fixed distance from its neighbors using a holding device made of insulating material, creating a stacked sequence that allows arcs to be safely guided and quenched along the plates' surfaces. The plates often feature V-shaped recesses toward the arc initiation point to facilitate controlled arc splitting and extinction, reducing the risk of damage to the equipment and surrounding components (DE102008021138A1) .

Spacing and Retention

The plates are inserted into a rectangular retaining box from an open longitudinal side, with their broad sides aligned parallel to the box's front. Ribs or spacers project from the broad side into the interior to maintain consistent spacing between plates, ensuring effective arc quenching and preventing short circuits between plates (DE102008021138A1) . Any modification to the plate spacing or plenum dimensions can compromise the arc-resistant performance and must be avoided.

Integration with Plenum or Duct Systems

For medium- and high-voltage switchgear, the arc-extinguishing plates are often part of a plenum or chimney exhaust system. This system channels the hot gases, plasma, and molten particles generated during an arc fault away from personnel and equipment. The plenum must be installed according to manufacturer specifications, with spring-loaded or louvered vents that open automatically during an arc event and close under normal operation. Proper installation ensures that arc gases are safely vented outside the equipment area, maintaining personnel safety and equipment integrity (Rockwell Automation, Eaton, ABB) .

Safety and Compliance

  • Only qualified electrical personnel with experience in high-voltage systems should perform installation.
  • All covers, hardware, and doors must be properly secured to maintain the arc-resistant rating of the equipment.
  • Personnel must wear arc flash PPE when working inside open compartments, even if electrically isolated.
  • The installation must comply with ANSI/IEEE C37.20.1 and C37.20.7 standards for arc-resistant switchgear (Eaton, ABB) .

Key Considerations

  • Do not alter the size or cross-sectional area of the plenum or plate assembly.
  • Ensure the exhaust points are classified as hazardous locations and are properly vented.
  • Verify that the plates are identical in shape and dimensions to maintain uniform arc quenching.
  • Follow manufacturer-specific instructions for SafeGear, VacClad, or AMPGARD systems to ensure compliance and safety (ABB, Eaton) . Proper installation of high-voltage arc-extinguishing plates, combined with correctly configured plenum or duct systems, is essential to protect personnel, prevent equipment damage, and maintain operational reliability in distribution boxes and switchgear assemblies.
