Wiring of 9 circuits in the distribution box

A 9-circuit distribution box is wired by connecting the main supply to a main MCB, routing through an RCCB for protection, and distributing power to nine individual MCBs, with proper neutral and earth connections.

Components Overview

  • Main MCB (Double Pole): Acts as the main switch, typically rated 63A for domestic use, connecting the incoming phase and neutral supply .
  • RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker): Provides protection against leakage currents, electric shock, and insulation faults. Usually rated 30mA for domestic installations .
  • Branch MCBs (Single Pole): Protect individual circuits from overload and short circuits. Each of the nine circuits will have its own MCB .
  • Neutral Link: Distributes neutral to all branch circuits.
  • Earth Link: Connects the supply and load earthing for safety.

Wiring Procedure

  1. Power Isolation: Ensure the main supply is turned off before starting any wiring .
  2. Mounting the Box: Secure the distribution box at an accessible height (~1.5m) in a dry, ventilated area .
  3. Main Supply Connection: Connect the incoming phase and neutral wires to the main MCB input terminals .
  4. RCCB Connection: Connect the output of the main MCB to the input of the RCCB. The RCCB output then feeds the branch MCBs .
  5. Branch Circuit Wiring: Connect each of the nine MCBs to the RCCB output. The phase wire goes to the MCB input, and the output goes to the respective circuit .
  6. Neutral Distribution: Connect all neutral wires from the branch circuits to the neutral link, which is connected to the RCCB neutral output .
  7. Earthing: Connect all earth wires from the circuits and the supply to the earth link in the box .
  8. Wire Management: Arrange wires neatly, using plastic ties to keep them straight and organized. Mark each wire for its circuit to simplify maintenance .
  9. Safety Inspection: After wiring, check all connections with a multimeter to ensure no short circuits, proper insulation, and correct polarity .

Additional Tips

  • Use MCBs and RCCBs certified to local standards (IEC, UL, or CE) .
  • Avoid overloading circuits; distribute loads evenly across the nine MCBs.
  • Label each MCB according to the connected load (e.g., lighting, sockets, AC) for easy identification.
  • Schedule periodic inspections to maintain safety and reliability. By following this procedure, a 9-circuit distribution box can be safely and efficiently wired, ensuring protection against overloads, leakage, and electrical hazards.
