Overview of the Process Flow

An integrated power supply, especially for embedded processors or industrial systems, typically follows a sequenced power-up and regulation process:

  1. Enable Signal Initiation The process begins when the Enable (EN) terminal receives a high signal, initiating the power-up sequence for the first DC-DC converter .
  2. Sequential DC-DC Converter Activation
    • DCDC 1 turns on first, and its output voltage rises to the target level.
    • The Power Good (PGOOD) signal monitors this voltage. Once the output reaches the set threshold (e.g., 90% of nominal voltage), the next DC-DC stage is enabled .
    • This sequence continues for all subsequent converters, ensuring controlled ramp-up and avoiding inrush current issues.
  3. Voltage Monitoring and Feedback
    • Each DC-DC converter is monitored by Power Good blocks, which provide high or low signals to indicate proper voltage levels .
    • Discharge circuits may be included to rapidly discharge output capacitors during power-down, ensuring safe and predictable shutdown.
  4. Integrated Power Device Components Modern integrated power devices, such as iPOWIR or PMICs, combine multiple elements in a single package:
    • Driver ICs
    • Upper and lower MOSFETs
    • Schottky diodes
    • Bypass capacitors for DC input and driver stability These devices simplify PCB layout and reduce component count while maintaining high efficiency.
  5. Power-Down Sequence
    • The shutdown process is also sequenced. Power Good signals detect when each DC-DC output drops below a threshold, triggering the next stage to turn off .
    • This ensures safe and orderly power removal, protecting sensitive components.
  6. System-Level Integration
    • For processors, FPGAs, or SoCs, multiple voltage rails may be required. A multi-channel PMIC can manage all rails, including LDOs and DC-DC converters, with integrated sequencing and monitoring .
    • Discrete solutions are more flexible for changing requirements but require additional external components.
