How TVS Diodes Work

A TVS diode is a specialized avalanche diode that remains high-impedance under normal operation but rapidly switches to a low-impedance state when a transient occurs. This diverts excess voltage to ground, preventing damage to the relay coil or control circuitry . TVS diodes can be unidirectional (asymmetrical V-I characteristics) or bidirectional (symmetrical V-I characteristics), with bidirectional types suitable for AC or bidirectional signals .

Selecting a TVS for a Relay

Key parameters to consider when choosing a TVS diode for relay protection include:

  • Breakdown Voltage (VBR): Should be slightly above the relay's nominal operating voltage but below the maximum voltage the relay can tolerate. For example, a 12 V relay may use a TVS with VBR around 12.4–13.3 V to avoid overvoltage stress .
  • Clamping Voltage (VCL): Maximum voltage the TVS allows during a transient. It must be below the voltage rating of the relay and connected electronics .
  • Peak Pulse Power (IPP): The TVS must handle the energy generated by the relay coil or external transients. For small relays, the energy is often low (e.g., 0.36 W for a 12 V, 30 mA coil), so a high-power TVS is not always necessary .
  • Polarity: Choose unidirectional for DC relays and bidirectional for AC or circuits with voltage reversals .

Placement in the Circuit

TVS diodes are typically connected in parallel across the relay coil or across the switch contacts. This ensures that any voltage spike generated when the coil is de-energized is clamped immediately, protecting both the relay and the driving electronics .

Additional Considerations

  • Environmental Protection: In industrial or substation applications, relays may be exposed to electromagnetic interference (EMI) or harsh conditions. TVS diodes, along with other surge protection devices, help maintain reliable operation .
  • Integration with Control Systems: Modern digital protection relays interface with analog and digital I/Os. TVS protection ensures that these inputs and outputs are not damaged by transients, improving system reliability .
