Concealed wiring process in distribution boxes

Concealed wiring in distribution boxes is installed using conduits embedded in walls or ceilings, with proper planning, conduit selection, wire pulling, and termination to ensure safety and compliance.

Planning and Layout

Before installation, prepare a detailed electrical layout plan showing the positions of distribution boxes, switches, sockets, and conduits. This ensures accurate routing, reduces future maintenance issues, and aligns with approved shop drawings and load schedules . Mark the conduit paths on walls or ceilings, considering safe zones to avoid mechanical damage from nails or screws, especially if cables are less than 50 mm from the surface .

Conduit Selection

  • PVC Conduits: Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, commonly used in residential installations .
  • Metallic Conduits (EMT or Steel): Provide stronger mechanical protection, preferred in industrial or high-risk areas .
  • Conduits must be securely fastened using approved clamps, with spacing as per project specifications, and bushings or locknuts should protect wires at entry points .

Installation Steps

  1. Create Wall Grooves: Cut channels in walls or ceilings to embed conduits .
  2. Install Electrical Boxes: Fix switch, socket, and junction boxes at correct heights and alignment .
  3. Lay Conduits: Place conduits in grooves, ensuring horizontal or vertical alignment as per drawings .
  4. Pull Wires: Use approved lubricants if necessary, pull multiple conductors simultaneously, and leave slack (200–250 mm) at outlets and junctions for terminations .
  5. Make Connections: Terminate wires in distribution boxes using appropriate connectors, ensuring insulation covers are applied to prevent exposure .
  6. Testing: Verify continuity, insulation resistance, and correct phase connections before closing boxes .
  7. Cover Grooves: Seal wall grooves with plaster or suitable finishing material to conceal wiring .

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure all materials are approved and inspected before installation .
  • Provide safe access to work areas and follow personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Maintain permanent accessibility for any joints or taps inside boxes or cabinets .
  • Follow BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 regulations for concealed wiring to minimize mechanical stress and potential damage .

Termination in Distribution Boxes

  • Confirm distribution board references with load schedules.
  • Use Type A-1 connectors for conductors ≤10 mm², Type A-2 for ≥16 mm², and Type B-1 for branch circuits .
  • Ensure all terminations are secure, insulated, and clearly labeled for future maintenance. By following these steps, concealed wiring in distribution boxes can be installed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with electrical standards, providing long-term reliability and protection against mechanical damage.
