A Light Curtain Convergence Switch is a safety device that ensures machines stop when a light curtain beam is interrupted, often integrated with safety relays to prevent operator access to hazardous zones.
Function and Operation
A Light Curtain Convergence Switch works in conjunction with a light curtain, which consists of a transmitter and receiver projecting parallel infrared beams across a danger zone. When an object or person interrupts one or more beams, the switch signals the machine to stop immediately, ensuring a safe condition . The convergence switch often interfaces with dual-input safety relays or two-hand operation consoles to verify that multiple safety conditions are met before allowing machine operation .
Integration with Safety Relays
In advanced setups, the light curtain outputs (OSSD1 and OSSD2) are monitored by a safety relay. The relay only enables the machine if all safety conditions are satisfied: the light curtain beams are uninterrupted, two-hand operation buttons are pressed simultaneously, and feedback circuits are closed. If any condition fails, the relay immediately shuts down the machine in a safety-related manner . This ensures compliance with safety standards such as EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL/PL ratings .
