Grounding lead-in and lead-out of distribution box

The grounding lead of a distribution box ensures safety by providing a low-resistance path for fault currents, protecting both personnel and equipment.

Purpose of Grounding

Grounding a distribution box is essential to prevent electric shock, protect equipment from overvoltage or lightning strikes, and stabilize system voltage levels. It channels fault currents safely into the earth, reducing the potential difference between conductive parts and the ground, which is critical for personnel safety and system reliability .

Connection Points

  1. Box to Mounting Plate: Attach a ground wire from a threaded stud at the bottom of the distribution box to the mounting plate .
  2. Mounting Plate to Central Ground: Connect a second grounding wire from the mounting plate to the factory or building central grounding point .
  3. Optional Spindle Grounding: For systems with spindles or tool cables, an additional ground wire may be required between the mounting plate and spindle plate, depending on cable length and number of spindles .

Wire Sizing

  • US Market: Use a 10 AWG (5.26 mm²) wire for the main grounding connection and 6 AWG (13.29 mm²) for spindle connections .
  • Other Markets: Use a 6 mm² wire for the main grounding connection and 16 mm² for spindle connections .

Resistance Requirements

The total ground resistance between all system parts should be less than 0.1 Ohm. When multiple grounding paths exist, resistances are calculated in parallel to ensure the total resistance remains within safe limits .

Grounding the Distribution Box Door

All metallic parts, including the door, must be bonded to the ground to prevent static discharge or accidental shock if a live wire contacts the door. NEC 250.148 mandates that all metallic components of an electrical enclosure be grounded .

Installation and Testing

  1. Prepare Tools: Grounding wire, ground rod, voltmeter, and insulating tools .
  2. Inspect the Box: Ensure no damage or cracks exist before grounding .
  3. Connect Ground Wire: Ensure a large contact area between the wire and metal parts for effective grounding .
  4. Verify Ground Rod: Check ground resistance with a voltmeter; adjust rod placement or quantity if resistance is too high .
  5. Test Grounding: Confirm voltage readings are within safe limits to ensure proper grounding . Proper grounding and bonding are critical for compliance with NEC, IEC, or local electrical standards, and they significantly enhance safety and equipment protection .
