Methods for Disassembling Fiber Optic Cables

Disassembling a fiber optic cable requires careful handling, proper tools, and strict safety precautions to avoid damaging the delicate glass fibers or causing injury.

Safety First

Fiber optic cables contain extremely thin glass or plastic strands that transmit data as light pulses. The light is often invisible infrared, which can damage your eyes if viewed directly, so always power down equipment before handling the cable and never look into the cable ends or ports . Wear safety glasses and work in a clean, dust-free area to prevent contamination of the fiber ends.

Removing the Cable from Equipment

  1. Identify the connector type: Common residential connectors include SC (push-pull) and LC (clip/latch) types .
  2. Power down the device: Unplug the modem, ONT, or fiber gateway to eliminate laser hazards .
  3. Release the connector: Depress the locking tab or clip and gently pull along the connector axis. Avoid twisting or bending the cable .
  4. Cap exposed ends: Use protective caps to prevent dust or scratches on the fiber tip .

Stripping and Preparing the Cable

If you need to access the internal fibers for repair or splicing:

  1. Slide back the connector boot to expose the cable jacket .
  2. Cut the outer jacket using a three-hole jacket stripper or fiber optic cutter, exposing the internal fibers and Kevlar strength members .
  3. Separate and strip the fibers: Use a fiber optic stripper to remove the protective coating from each fiber without nicking the glass core .
  4. Trim Kevlar fibers with Kevlar shears to prevent interference during splicing .
  5. Clean and cleave: Use alcohol wipes to clean the fiber and a precision cleaver to cut the fiber end at the correct angle for splicing .

Reassembly or Splicing

After disassembly, fibers can be re-terminated or spliced:

  • Mechanical splicing: Align fibers in a connector with a gel or adhesive to transmit light.
  • Fusion splicing: Use a fusion splicer to melt and join fiber ends for a low-loss, permanent connection .
  • Test the connection: Use a visual fault locator or fiber optic meter to ensure proper alignment and signal transmission .

Key Tips

  • Work slowly and steadily to avoid microbends or breaks in the fiber .
  • Avoid lateral force or twisting, which can permanently damage the fiber.
  • Always follow manufacturer guidelines for connector types and strip lengths.
  • Keep the workspace clean to prevent contamination of fiber ends, which can degrade signal quality . By following these steps and precautions, you can safely disassemble a fiber optic cable for repair, maintenance, or replacement while minimizing the risk of damage or injury.
