Overview of TIA-598-C

The TIA-598-C standard is the widely adopted color-coding system for fiber optic cables in the United States and internationally. It provides a consistent framework for identifying fibers, buffer tubes, cable jackets, and connectors, which reduces miswiring, speeds installation, and enhances safety in high-density networks . The standard applies to both premises and outside plant cables and supports identification of single fibers, fiber ribbons, and fiber subunits .

12-Fiber Color Sequence

Individual fibers within a multi-fiber cable follow a 12-color repeating sequence:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For cables exceeding 12 fibers, the sequence repeats with stripes to maintain unique identification. For example, fibers 13–24 repeat the same colors, with black fibers receiving yellow stripes and additional stripes added for each 12-fiber group .

Jacket Color Coding

Outer cable jackets provide a quick visual indicator of fiber type and mode:

  • Yellow: Single-mode (OS1/OS2)
  • Orange: Multimode (OM1/OM2)
  • Aqua: Laser-optimized multimode (OM3/OM4)
  • Emerald Green: OM5 wideband multimode
  • Blue: Indoor polarization-maintaining fiber
  • Other colors: Custom or hybrid cables with printed legends for identification

Connector and Boot Colors

Connector bodies and strain relief boots also follow color conventions to indicate fiber mode and polish type:

  • Blue: UPC (Ultra Physical Contact)
  • Green: APC (Angled Physical Contact)
  • Beige: Multimode UPC
  • Aqua: Multimode laser-optimized UPC
  • Metallic connectors may rely on boot color for identification

High-Fiber-Count Cables

For cables with more than 12 fibers, a tube-and-fiber system is used:

  • Each buffer tube is assigned a color from the 12-color sequence.
  • Individual fibers inside the tube follow the same 12-color sequence.
  • Example: Fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable is the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) . This system allows accurate identification of up to 144 fibers in a single cable assembly, supporting large-scale deployments in data centers and FTTH networks .
