Single Reel Testing of Optical Cable

Single-reel optical cable testing ensures the fiber's integrity, length, and attenuation before installation, using visual inspection, OTDR, and power meter measurements.

Preparation and Inspection

  1. Check Equipment and Documentation: Verify the optical cable specifications, factory test records, and quantity against the design documents or contract requirements. Inspect the cable reel for physical damage, cracks, or irregularities along the fiber length .
  2. Prepare Tools and Instruments: Gather necessary tools such as an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR), light source, optical power meter, fusion splicer (if needed), and launch cables. Ensure all instruments are calibrated and functioning .
  3. Technical Familiarization: Review the engineering design, construction acceptance regulations, and prepare test forms for recording measurements and observations .

Testing Procedures

  1. Visual and Physical Inspection: Examine the cable for surface defects, uniformity, and proper labeling. Confirm the reel is correctly numbered and the cable length is marked .
  2. Fiber Length Measurement: Measure the actual fiber length on the reel, as nominal lengths may differ from actual lengths. This ensures proper matching and prevents waste during installation .
  3. Optical Attenuation Testing:
    • Using OTDR: Connect a launch cable to the OTDR and attach the fiber under test with a temporary fusion or mechanical splice. Take a trace and measure loss between two markers to calculate the fiber attenuation coefficient. OTDR can also detect cracks, non-uniformities, and splice quality .
    • Using Light Source and Power Meter (LSPM): Connect the light source to one end of the fiber and the power meter to the other. Measure the optical power loss and compare it with manufacturer specifications .
  4. Mode Conditioning (for multimode fibers): Use a mandrel wrap or mode conditioner to ensure accurate measurement. Singlemode fibers require only a small loop (~50 mm) to maintain single-mode propagation .
  5. Record and Compare Results: Document all measurements, including fiber length, attenuation, and any defects. Compare results with factory-provided data to confirm the fiber has not been damaged during transport or handling .

Post-Test Handling

  • Restore Cable Ends and Reel Packaging: Seal the cable ends and ensure the reel is properly labeled with the outer end mark and cable length .
  • Segregate and Store: Separate tested cables by type and length, and store them safely to prevent damage before installation .

Tips for Accurate Testing

  • Ensure all temporary splices are clean and properly cleaved to avoid measurement errors .
  • Use bidirectional testing if required to improve accuracy.
  • Regularly check and maintain test equipment to ensure reliable results. By following these steps, single-reel optical cable testing can reliably verify the fiber's quality, length, and optical performance, ensuring safe and efficient installation.
