What is a Fiber Optic Patch Cord?

A fiber optic patch cord, also called a fiber jumper, is a terminated fiber cable designed for flexible, short-distance interconnections between network devices such as switches, patch panels, and optical transceivers . Unlike backbone trunk cables, patch cords are lightweight, flexible, and frequently handled, making them ideal for intra-rack, inter-rack, and cross-connect applications . They serve as the “last meter” connection in most fiber optic systems, bridging devices while maintaining high signal quality .

Types of Fiber

Patch cords are classified by fiber type:

  • Single-mode (SM, OS1/OS2): Core ~9µm, used for long-distance connections, data center interconnects, and telecom backbones .
  • Multimode (MM, OM1/OM2/OM3/OM4/OM5): Core 50–62.5µm, used for short to medium distances within data centers. OM1/OM2 are orange, OM3/OM4 aqua, OM5 lime green or violet .

Connector Types

Common connectors include:

  • LC: Small, duplex, widely used in modern data centers, compatible with QSFP transceivers via LC breakouts .
  • SC, ST: Standard connectors for various network setups .
  • MTP/MPO: Multi-fiber connectors for high-density applications . Connector choice affects insertion loss, return loss, and overall network performance .

Jacket Materials

Patch cords come with different jackets depending on installation requirements:

  • PVC: Basic indoor use, not suitable for air ducts .
  • Plenum (OFNP): Fire-resistant, safe for air ducts .
  • Riser (OFNR): For vertical shafts between floors .
  • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Emits minimal smoke/toxic gas when burned, common in Europe and high-safety areas .

Key Considerations

  • Flexibility: Patch cords are designed for frequent handling and tight bends, but exceeding the bend radius can increase signal loss .
  • Cleanliness: Dust or dirt on connectors can degrade performance .
  • Compatibility: Mixing connector types or APC/UPC polishing can cause signal issues .
  • Diameter: Common diameters are 2.0mm and 3.0mm; thinner cables save space, thicker cables provide durability .

Applications

  • Intra-rack connections: Server NIC to top-of-rack switch via LC duplex or MPO breakout .
  • Inter-rack connections: Horizontal patching between distribution frames and spine switches .
  • Cross-connect frames: Structured patching in main distribution areas for colocation or enterprise networks .
  • FTTH / building entry: Indoor-outdoor transition cables connecting outside plant to customer premise equipment .
