Fiber optic couplers of different sizes

Fiber optic couplers come in various sizes and types, supporting single-mode, multimode, polarization-maintaining, large-core, and double-clad fibers, with different fabrication methods and performance characteristics.

Types and Sizes of Fiber Couplers

Fiber couplers are devices that split or combine light between optical fibers. They vary in fiber compatibility and physical size, depending on the application:

  • Single-mode (SM) couplers: Designed for fibers that carry a single light mode, typically with small core diameters (~8–10 µm).
  • Multimode (MM) couplers: Support larger cores (50–62.5 µm), suitable for high-power or short-distance applications.
  • Polarization-maintaining (PM) couplers: Maintain the polarization of light, often used in interferometry or sensing.
  • Large-core and double-clad fibers: Used in high-power laser delivery or pump-signal combiners, with cores ranging from tens to hundreds of microns .

Fabrication Methods

Couplers are manufactured using different techniques, which influence their size, bandwidth, and insertion loss:

  • Fusion couplers: Fibers are twisted and fused over a few centimeters. They offer low insertion loss (~0.3 dB) and high power handling but have a limited wavelength bandwidth (±40 nm).
  • Micro-optic couplers: Use lensed fiber collimators and optical elements. They provide ultra-broad bandwidth (±200 nm), high polarization extinction ratio (>30 dB), and excellent thermal stability, but are more expensive.
  • Planar lightwave circuit (PLC) couplers: Fabricated via photolithography and etching, ideal for high fiber counts and compact size, with broad bandwidth (±200 nm) but slightly higher coupling loss .

Performance Considerations

  • Coupling ratio: Determines how light is split between outputs; can be fixed or custom.
  • Insertion loss: Lower in fusion couplers, slightly higher in PLCs.
  • Return loss: Indicates back-reflected light; high return loss is desirable.
  • Wavelength range: Standard couplers operate over narrow bands (±15 nm), broadband couplers over wider ranges (±40 nm or more), and dual-window couplers handle two distinct bands (e.g., 1310 nm and 1550 nm), .
  • Power handling: Ranges up to 100 W, depending on fiber type and fabrication method.
  • Temperature tolerance: Some couplers operate up to 300°C .

Applications

Fiber couplers of different sizes are used in:

  • Telecommunications: Splitting signals in single-mode networks.
  • Data centers: High-density multimode or single-mode connections.
  • Laser systems: Pump-signal combiners for high-power fiber lasers.
  • Sensing and interferometry: PM couplers for polarization-sensitive measurements . In summary, selecting a fiber optic coupler requires considering fiber type, core size, fabrication method, bandwidth, insertion loss, and power handling. Different sizes and types allow flexibility for applications ranging from high-density data centers to high-power laser systems.
