Messenger Strand and Lashing Wire

A steel messenger strand is a stranded steel cable that supports the weight of aerial fiber optic cables. It usually consists of six wires wrapped around a central wire, often made of carbon steel with a zinc or zinc-aluminum coating for corrosion protection . The messenger strand is tensioned between poles to withstand the weight of the fiber cable and environmental loads such as wind, ice, or snow . Lashing wire is a thin stainless steel wire (typically 0.038" to 0.045") used to attach fiber cables to the messenger strand. It is annealed for high ductility and has a minimum strength of 70–90 kpsi. The lashing wire wraps around both the fiber cable and the messenger strand, securing the cable while allowing some flexibility for thermal expansion and movement .

Tension Clamps

For points of high mechanical stress, such as dead-end poles or angle poles, tension clamps are used. These clamps anchor the fiber cable to the pole and bear the axial load, preventing slippage or mechanical failure . A typical tension clamp kit includes:

  • Pole bands and mounting hooks to attach the clamp to wood, concrete, or metal poles
  • Stainless steel bands and buckles to secure the cable and clamp
  • Hand-guided banding tools for tightening and cutting the bands on-site These clamps are especially useful for ADSS (All-Dielectric Self-Supporting) cables or figure-8 cables that require secure anchoring at critical points .

Stainless Steel Bands

For additional security, high-strength stainless steel bands can be used to fasten fiber cables to poles, towers, or walls. These bands provide excellent corrosion resistance and environmental stability, making them suitable for long-term outdoor installations .

Installation Considerations

  • Tensioning: Ensure the messenger strand is properly tensioned to support the cable weight and environmental loads without excessive sag .
  • Bending Radius: Avoid bending the fiber cable below its minimum bending radius to prevent damage .
  • Corrosion Protection: Use coated steel strands and stainless steel lashing or bands to prevent rust and extend the lifespan of the installation .
  • Slack Management: Include extra cable length for splicing and maintenance, and store slack properly at poles or access points . By combining messenger strands, lashing wire, tension clamps, and stainless steel bands, fiber optic cables can be securely fixed to steel supports, ensuring reliable performance and long-term durability in aerial installations.
