72-core cable and optical fiber

72-core fiber optic cables are high-density cables designed for long-distance and high-capacity data transmission, available in both indoor and outdoor configurations with single-mode or multimode fibers.

Cable Structure and Design

Outdoor 72-core cables such as the GYTY53 type feature a loose tube design with six 12-fiber tubes, totaling 72 fibers. The fibers are housed in water-resistant gel-filled tubes, stranded around a central steel strength member, and protected by steel tape armor and double PE sheaths for crush, rodent, and water resistance. These cables are suitable for direct burial, duct, or aerial installation, and comply with ITU-T G.652D/G.657A1, IEC 60794-3, and Telcordia GR-20-CORE standards . Short-term tensile strength is typically ≥ 3000 N, with a bending radius ≥ 20×OD. Indoor 72-core cables, such as SlimCORE™ 72F, are subunitized with six 12-fiber subunits, designed for high-density indoor environments like data centers, telecom rooms, and building backbones. They are CPR-rated (Cca) for fire safety in EU installations, have a compact 8.2 mm diameter, and moderate fanout density for easy termination and routing in ducts or cable trays .

Fiber Types

  • Single-mode fibers (G.652D/G.657A1/A2): Optimized for long-distance transmission with low attenuation, suitable for backbone and metro networks .
  • Multimode fibers (OM3, OM4, OM5): Used for shorter distances, high-speed LAN, and data center interconnects .

Applications

  • Outdoor cables: Backbone networks, FTTx, metro networks, industrial parks, and direct burial installations requiring mechanical protection and water resistance .
  • Indoor cables: Enterprise data centers, inter-floor aggregation, communications cabinet patching, and structured cabling in commercial buildings .

Selection Considerations

When selecting a 72-core fiber optic cable, consider:

  • Installation route: Direct burial, duct, aerial, or indoor tray.
  • Cable structure: Loose tube vs subunitized, armored vs non-armored.
  • Mechanical properties: Tensile strength, crush resistance, bending radius.
  • Compliance and standards: ITU-T, IEC, CPR ratings.
  • Fiber type: Single-mode vs multimode depending on distance and bandwidth requirements.
  • Project requirements: Drum length, batch consistency, testing, and delivery schedule .

Summary

72-core fiber optic cables provide high-capacity, reliable data transmission for both indoor and outdoor networks. Outdoor armored cables offer durability and environmental protection, while indoor subunitized cables provide compact, manageable installation in high-density environments. Proper selection ensures long-term performance, ease of installation, and compliance with safety and telecom standards.
