Core Functionality

A fiber optic slip ring (also called a fiber optic rotary joint or FORJ) allows continuous transmission of light signals between a stationary and a rotating component without physical electrical contacts . Signal Transmission Process

  1. Input Signal: Light from a stationary optical fiber enters the slip ring assembly.
  2. Collimating Optics: A lens or GRIN (gradient-index) rod lens converts the diverging light into a parallel beam, minimizing signal loss and sensitivity to misalignment .
  3. Rotating Assembly: The collimated light passes through a transparent element in the rotating part of the slip ring. This element maintains the optical path even as the assembly rotates .
  4. Output Lens: On the opposite side, another lens focuses the light back into the core of the output fiber, ensuring the signal continues to the stationary receiver .
  5. Output Signal: The output fiber carries the optical signal to the rest of the system, maintaining data integrity across rotation.
