What is a DAC?

DAC stands for Direct Attach Cable, which is a high-speed cable with transceivers pre-attached at both ends. DACs are primarily made of copper wires (often silver-plated Twinax) and transmit electrical signals directly between devices such as switches, routers, and servers . They are available in two main types:

  • Passive DAC: No electronics inside; transmits signals directly over copper. Cost-effective, low power consumption, and suitable for short distances (typically up to 7 meters for 10Gbps, shorter for higher speeds), .
  • Active DAC (ACC/AEC): Includes electronics to amplify or condition the signal, allowing slightly longer distances (up to 15 meters) but with higher power consumption . DAC cables are ideal for intra-rack or adjacent rack connections due to their low latency, simplicity, and cost efficiency .

What is an Optical Module?

An optical module (or optical transceiver module) is a pluggable device that converts electrical signals into optical signals for transmission over fiber optic cables .   • Optical Modules: Suitable for longer distances, flexible fiber routing, and high-density data center environments. They require fiber infrastructure and have higher upfront costs and power consumption but provide greater reliability and scalability .
